Jazz FM have just gone truly national on the Digital One UK DAB network.
This is an exciting move for a station which started off as an online accompaniment to the London FM station of the same name. When the FM station flipped format to “Smooth FM” the web service jumped into the digital broadcast arena by taking up DAB slots in a number of regions. With a niche but very dedicated audience the station has grown with a weekly reach of 448,000 in the last RAJAR’s.

Digital One, the national UK digital multiplex, has another DAB exclusive station on board.
Premiere Christian Radio begun broadcasting nationwide today joining a growing list of DAB exclusive stations including Planet Rock, BFBS and Amazing Radio.
Although probably not earth shattering news to most it is another green shoot in digital broadcasting after the ravages of the past eighteen months. Another is the continued adoption of “Slideshow” where broadcasters “now playing” information is displayed with graphics on a DAB receivers colour screen. Industry shocking announcement today from the UK that GCap are going to close down DAB.
Before we get too excited, we have to remember that GCap as a company is under threat of a hostile takeover by Global Radio. What better way to protect the company than reduce costs as quickly as possible. So yes, this will involve GCap getting out of their involvement with multiplex company Digital One and the sad loss of two of their stations.
