At last weeks EBU Digital Radio Conference I saw a most brilliant demonstration of how DAB+ radio really improves our medium.
A radio show was set up and broadcast from the conference. As guests were being interviewed, simple photos of them at the microphone were added to the programmes Slideshow output. As people across Europe listened their radio displayed a picture of that speaker in the studio.

As a commercial operator it was most interesting to hear what big national public service broadcasters are up to in the digital arena during last weeks conference in Brussels.
The European Broadcasting Union believes the future of radio is digital broadcasting. It will be multi-platform, with the internet complementing services not superseding them, and for all this to work Europe needs EU wide digital radio policies from government. I attended the recent EBU Digital Radio Conference in Belfast where an affirmative plan has been put in place by the EBU to advance the actual introduction of digital radio across Europe.
What surprised me most about the conference was the amount of consensus and agreement despite the room being full of disparate parties and viewpoints. Three points came across loud and clear; co-operation between interested parties, content is king and the importance of the internet.

This afternoon over 150 delegates from more than 30 European countries came to agreement on a roadmap for the future of European digital radio. The delegates were attending the 4th annual European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Digital Radio Conference at the Europa Hotel in Belfast.
The conference agreement is a first for European radio. Up to this point the industry has found it difficult to reach any consensus on digital radio with debate often focussing on the merits or drawbacks of different technologies.

A major step forward was taken today when the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced a unified European standard for digital radio receivers.
The announcement, which has the backing of Europe’s major broadcasters and manufacturers, effectively creates a single digital radio market across the entire continent. So a radio purchased in France will work just as well in the UK despite each country adopting different methods of digital broadcasting.
